Publication of the Act that reduces the workweek to 40 hours

On April 26th, 2023, Act No. 21,561 was published in the Official Gazette, which progressively reduces the workweek to 40 hours, among other important changes.

With the publication of the Act, the reduction of the workweek will take place on the following dates:

Progressive Reduction of the Workweek
Period Maximum Ordinary Weekly Workday
Starting on April 26th, 2024 44 hours
Starting on April 26th, 2026 42 hours
Starting on April 26th, 2028 40 hours
The reduction of special workdays for specific industries, such as cargo and passenger transportation, railway, and ship crew members, among others; the possibility of a four-day workweek with three days off, and regulations related to exceptional workweek systems, will come into effect on April 26th, 2028.

Likewise, generally, all modifications that do not involve a reduction in the workweek, such as those that affect employees who are exempt from the work hour limit, and domestic employees, will come into effect on April 26th, 2024.
