Control and Regulation of Energy Drinks is Approved

The National Congress approved a ban on the sale of energy drinks to people under the age of 18. This law was approved on April 25 of this year, with the aim of protecting the life and health of minors in Honduras.

The Law will establish regulations for the sale of all those beverages that contain a combination of ingredients such as caffeine, sugar, taurine, carnitine, creatine, among others, which may cause physiological effects such as increased heart rates, deeper breathing and increased blood circulation to supply oxygen.

It also specifies the commercial establishments where the commercialization of energy drinks is prohibited, including health and academic establishments, as well as both public and private sports facilities.

This issue was discussed with officials from the Health Regulation Agency (ARSA), who emphasized the consequences of the unregulated sale of energy drinks to minors. The Act states that the health authority will be responsible for labelling rules for energy drinks, ensuring the identification of health risks and empowering it to impose penalties on those who contravene these provisions.

The Law for the Control and Regulation of Energy Drinks will enter into force from the day of its publication in the Official Gazette.
